For the Indians of the Amazon, it's a punishment from God. For European surfers, it's the latest adventure. For both, it is more than just a wave; the Pororoca, or big roar, is unpredictable and deadly.
The Pororoca is a tidal phenomenon; a tsunami-like force, which tears through the Amazon for hundreds of miles. Amongst locals it is associated with tragedy and destruction, and yet it has become a source of income, attracting surfers from around the world, eager to take on the longest wave in the world. Facing piranhas, alligators and the wall of death, it is clear: the first thing you learn from this wave is respect."
