While most sea cucumbers are bottom dwellers, this beautiful pelagic species swims in the water column. Recent advances in submersible and ROV technology have allowed scientists to observe these, and other mid water animals in their natural environment. If captured in traditional trawl nets, such a creature would be hauled to the surface and reduced to an unrecognizable blob of jelly.

  • @jackson4cool I totally agree. The ocean is filled with beautiful lighting fish and so is the sea floor!

  • thumbs up if you think the sea floor should be called pandora

  • @dirtymartini96

Seemingly and strangely it does glow like that or even more ( if you pay attention to the smaller light colored photophores too) :)

  • So I may be inclined for : glowing bacteria symbiosis with the bigger organism or the traditional oxiluciferin result ( shifted to red light, because red color light usually is not detected by the deep sea creatures).

Hi It´s just phenomenal and this is probably the first time we see this kind of bioluminescence combined with more common smaller blueish lights ( the small light photophores that cover some parts of it´s body).

Red, pink and even purple bioluminescence do exist ( to not mention several other colors),

  • how does it light up that red ring in its... stomach(idk)...? pretty tho, it looks like it would be a beautiful space creature, it just floats around....
