I think the one of the problems with the current economy is that we are moving away from being an industrial power.

If that's true how come states with the highest rate of union also have the highest rate of unemployment like Michigan.

Unions make it harder for business to expand and higher more people.

Companies that have Unions are far more likely to go bankruped.

The initial goal for unions were to prevent workers from being exploited by their employers and to provide for them legal help. Because of Unions; the standard of work has improved.
Michigan was hit hard because it was one of the biggest automobile manufacturers in the U.S. The majority of job loss came from failing manufacturers and any jobs related.
Yes, some unions result in exploiting the employer but without Unions, workers would practically become slaves.

yes unions are good for workers, but they can also be bad for example the city unions in chicago refused pay cuts thus 1000+ lost there jobs . it's a double edged sword but it works better then government
