This is one of those yirdaki that blow your mind. Not only was it made by one of the greats in Arnhem Land, Bruce Burrngupurrngu Wunungmurra, but it has also been used in ceremony. And to cap things off, it has the most gorgeous artwork one could imagine on a yirdaki... very fine and intricate rarrk (cross-hatching) with detailed renditions of Ancestral Snakes.
The story goes that this yirdaki was made at Gurrumuru outstation by Burrngupurrngu. It was then brought to Galiwin'ku, Elcho Island, for ceremony when Burrngupurrngu and family went across for a funeral. Whilst at Galiwin'ku, the yirdaki was played in ceremony and at the same time painted up in ochres.
This superb yirdaki plays in the key of E flat fundamental and G overtone. It has a totally natural termite-eaten bore with not a single chisel or rasp mark to be seen in its interior. It is light at 3.0 kg and thin-walled, giving excellent resonance.
Burrngupurrngu's waku'mirringu, his nephew Larry Winiwini, shows off with this amazing stick. Who is the best? Burrngupurrngu! Say what? Winiwini! They're both great in my books...
This is a very special and unique opportunity to add an amazing instrument to your collection, a yirdaki that has been good enough for Yolngu for ceremonial use. And it is gorgeously decorated in ochres of the highest standard... Check out:
