Randal Bryant, dean of Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science, accepted a Duke's Choice Award for the Alice teaching tool at the 2009 JavaOne conference. The Duke's Choice Awards highlight the efforts of the Java developer community and the innovative applications they create. The winners are chosen by Vice President and Sun Fellow James Gosling (CS'83) and a team of Java technology experts at Sun.

Alice is an innovative teaching tool that provides drag-and-drop style interaction allowing students to construct programs without syntax errors and learn the basic concepts of object-oriented programming.
