Confessin' (That I Love You)

Jesse Crawford on the Wurlitzer Pipe Organ
Recorded October 1, 1930

There were numerous "kings of the consol" in the theatre organ's heyday, but its biggest star was Jesse Crawford, a simple orphan boy from California who began his career and honed his skills out west before enjoying great success in Chicago. He played the Chicago Tivoli and opened the palatial 3900-seat Chicago Theatre. His big break came in 1926 when he and his wife Helen (also a top theatre organist) were hired to play the huge Wurlitzer at the new 3700-seat Paramount Theatre in Times Square, New York. Through his personal appearances in front of countless sold-out houses, dozens of recordings in the twenties and thirties, as well as radio work, Crawford may have been the most widely heard organist of all time. As a musician, he taught the organ to sing.
