Ed Fendley, currently Chair of the Arlington County Public Schools (APS) School Board, has held a longstanding public and private agenda against the Arlington Traditional School. By intentionally misrepresenting APS policies or creating arcane APS bureaucratic mechanisms time and again to justify and amplify his point of view, Mr. Fendley has sought either to circumvent the 100% fair countywide admissions process to grant he and his few N. Arlington neighbors unfair and special access to the countywide school (thereby denying other Arlington communities of their opportunity to attend) OR to evict the school itself from its building and kickoff massive cascading boundary changes (1200+ students moved) so a new neighborhood school could be provided to his neighbors and supporters. While he has announced his desire to not seek re-election, in February 2009 he publicly stated his intentions to attempt yet again to pursue his narrow and parochial interests via his public office. • Arlington classrooms are "crowded" because the county sets a class size goal up to 30 percent lower than that required by the state. Even so, actual class sizes are dropping lower than that target in "crowded" schools because of the use of temporary class rooms. Fendley has been pushing the idea of a crisis just to further his personal agenda. He doesn't care about the thousands of kids who would be hurt, just as long as his neighborhood is taken care of.

  • New elementary space can also be created at the Wilson Building. Projections show the whole system reaching full capacity soon, so shuffling kids around is rearranging the deck chairs to no effect.

  • why in the world was the Walter Reed School on Washington Blvd reoutfitted to accommodate office spaces. To have remodeled it and opened it as an elementary school would have made much better sense. It's ridiculous to move all of the Arlington Traditional School children. There are much better ways to take care of this.
