And why is it so poor?

The point of ppl who debate scientific accuracy of this movie is, than in reality, it is completely inaccurate. This is a book+movie promoting military ties of Australia and US+UK even with nuclear conflict in sight, which in reality don't have such interest. At the same time US presence on this continent is very profitable during 'lesser wars period'.

That's simply not true and it is believed due to the reasons I listed in my comment as well as its persistence in media. Half the people I know in the military are NBC (WMD for you civilians) specialists and they've confirmed this a thousand times. So long as you are not in a targeted location, know how to protect yourself from fallout, and have enough water and food for up to 5 weeks you can easily survive. What happens next though is the real question...

Making love to Rachel Ward on a hillside overlooking the ocean at sundown, what a way to go..

oh poor humanity! the Universe will miss it so!

I don't know.. if you're going to die anyway better to make it quick and painless! Under the circumstances in this story you'd have to be pretty retardedto 'change your mind' WTF!

This was much better than the original, and I liked the original very much when I first watched it. It followed the book more, and went completely on it's own to make a better story, adaptable to these times. I was into it the whole time. Things were explained much better and in detail. Still, in remake, this is the most compassionately told, nuclear war story.

A couple of thoughts about On The Beach
1)I actually liked this version over the original. The acting was A LOT better in the remake as opposed to the original. In the original, none of the actors even attempted an Australian accent and most of the actors performance was wooden to say the least.
2)It cracks me up hearing people debate how scientifically accurate the story is. In a nuclear war, a LOT of people would die and a lot of real estate would be destroyed. That was Nevil Shute's point

All that over the issue of Taiwan.

This movie is most certainly a very VERY poor adaptation of the original novel. Which was.. written in 1957. I would heartily recommend anyone even vaguely interested to read that. And consider the time in which it was written just 5 years before the Cuban Missile Crisis. Which, as many historians contend is the closest we have ever come to Nuclear War.
American readers will I'm sure find the character of the Submarine Captain in the Novel. Worthy of his rank and to be admired.
