Smooth pursuit is considered abnormal if the patient appears to lose the target repeatedly and then catches up with fast corrective movements, which is known as saccadic eye tracking. The presence of saccadic eye tracking is suggestive of brainstem or cerebellar lesions.

Ah I got to see this test performed on a patient with Meniere's. It was fascinating but I felt bad for the patient. : \
