Karlheinz Stockhausen: "Spiral" (1968) for soloist with short-wave receiver. Péter Eötvös, electrochord with synthesizer, short-wave receiver. SPIRAL was composed in September 1968 in Madison, Connecticut (USA). The world premiere was played by the oboist Heinz Holliger on May 15th, 1969 at the Muzicki Biennale Zagreb. On April 18th, 1971, two versions of SPIRAL were recorded at the WDR Cologne with Péter Eötvös and Harald Bojé.

I like musique concrete, I like Ligeti's sick music, I like Bartok and Penderecki, but for crying out loud, they've called this music? And there is propapbly a sheetmusic for this too? Man, this takes the cake. You mean to play the peace, I must sit next to a radio and hope that I can remix something from the stations? I don't understand this music.

I have a particular admiration for the quality of sounds Stockhausen achieves for this work. As often, not only are the sounds fascinating, but his means of composition, are clever, like in "microphonie"....
