Idealy take someone who knows somethings about bikes with you but if your unable to find someone do the following..

Call & ask does the bike have history & do you have reciepts of work done to it...has it been dropped?
(a custom paint job is a give away)

As said in the video ask if he could please take a side fairing off & not start it the day you go to see it.

When you arrive, put ya hand on the engine making sure it has not been started.

Check the oil, if new.. start and let it run for 10mins, turn off and check oil again. didn't go cloudy? good.

In the time the bike is running, check the following..
sprocket
suspension, hard to do when bike is cold (PM me if you want it explained) but you are looking for it to spring back, not sag.

fork seals
tyres
brakes & brake lines for leaks
stand at the rear of the bike to see the frame is not bent under foot pegs for wear
ask for a ride, if they say no, ask to put it on a race stand or centre stand & go through the gears listening to unusual noises.

Still happy? buy it! & remember to haggle :)

Lastly copy/paste/print and take this with ya. Ride Safe.

  • Great vid. You covered all the essential things. Although another tip that can give you peace of mind when buying a used bike:

Depending on the state you live in you can do a REVS check or Vehicle Securities Register enquiry to ensure the bike you want to buy isn't stolen; wrecked; written-off; defected or has finance owing.

Netrider also have a very good checklist: netrider(dot)net(dot)au/articles/?page=used_bike_guide
