The credit for writing this song goes to three men, Jimmy Davis, Ram Ramirez and Jimmy Sherman, although it's a bit fuzzy who actually wrote what. It was published in 1942, but because of a musician's dispute wasn't recorded until 1944 by the great Billie Holliday. This is arguably one of the dozen or so jazz masterpieces of all time sung here by Sarah Vaughan who gives a reading of it that's in a class with the original Billie Holliday recording.

  • I was actually looking for the Billie Holiday version, but Sarah is good too...

  • @tales88 I concur with you, 100%. That version is my favorite....much more innovative and evocative. I LOVE the beautiful voice of the "Divine Miss Sarah". Two of my other favorites are "Dreamsville" and "Star Eyes".

  • I hear the echoes of Amy Winehouse...

  • Beautiful!! Certainly better than anything out there today, I wasn'nt even born then, but I will listen to these songstresses and songs anyday of the week. Thanks for posting!!!

  • Maravillosa !!!!

  • I Prefer Ella's version although Sarah was still good

  • This is a lovely version, but my all-time favourite version is Carmen Mcrae's, which yu can also listen to on YouTube

  • @tales88 I listened to it. It's better than this version but I continue to have trouble with Sarah's singing in general. Her voice is beautiful, certainly a better voice than Billie Holiday's, yet the penetrating risk-taking emotionalism in Billie Holiday shines through all of her work. I hope I won't be murdered for this, but Sarah strikes me as an enormous talent who doesn't really know what she's singing about. With I could be more positive, particularly since we're both from Newark.

  • @goback3spaces you should definitely take a listen to the version of the song thats on you tube just called Sarah Vaughan - Lover Man. Its 3:19 long... its perhaps my favorite Sarah Vaughan song

  • Professional job from Sarah, and yet she doesn't seem to appreciate the meaning of the song.
