The rest of the game was played on inertia, not because there was a chance (and because the game might be close enough to reach counting, if already played to this stage was probably on white's mind too for a while)

  • @Littlewhitelephant

Now for a few answers - while it is agreed that H14 as move 167 may be better than what was played, The whole sequence up to W182 is quite simple, followed by a couple of forcing moves and B187 kill on the right side... Well

That sequence is pretty simple and easy to read, and after B187, the game is already won for black. , even with that center.

That was also the opinion of the professionals commenting this on other sites.

So Gu Li saw one way to victory, and played it.

Before I make any further replies to this, I believe it's much better to analyze the game together and have these discussions on a board:) Though I don't play there non-teaching games often, I can be found on KGS as "grolich". I'm approximately 1d.

(it's also always a pleasure to meet and discuss with new players).

I'd still post a few here until I hear from you again though :)

  • @grolich In this version of treating the KO black has less ko-threats but manages to place C12 as KO-threat (1:34), which creates AJI !. This Aji could later be exploited by moves like G13, G12 and K12, which are all ladderbrakers for the ladder at M8.

Gu Li should have continued G13 with H14 etc. but didnt treat the lower KO this way so that Lee Sedool was able to close the big entry Gaps (and the Aji !) with white H14.

And there is D16 (creating 2 cutting points)

Sorry if I didn't understand your comment (if not, please correct me or explain it)

Also this is not a beginner level review so not everything can be gone over I'm sure

Since the commentators are all Go professionals and extremely strong players I doubt something elementary was missed. But your comment was a bit unclear. because 1) the black group isn't dead yet. Any stones in the center area would threaten to revive it and 2) even with more threats, the ko on the right side was too heavy for black (what determines that is who risks what, not the number of ko threats). Finally, normally (with exceptions) ko threats don't compensate.

  • 2:10 black R10 for safe ? I dont know why B S12 at all

  • The commentary didnt take into account that the black group on the left was dead already. It's enough if black manages to get some ko-threats there.
