Roy Castle and Jimmy James improvised this sketch together, gradually expanding it from a 2 minute sketch to a full 16 minute spot over a period of 2 years. This recording of the final version of the sketch, from a Tyne-Tees TV show, is after Roy had left the act. Roy played Hutton Conyers, the idiot holding the box. After Roy moved on to other things, anyone on the bill was roped in to play Conyers. The other stooge, Eli Woods, was always played by Jack Casey, Jimmy's nephew.
The late great Roy Castle did this routine with Jimmy and Ely. It was great and so is this. Probably one of the cleverest and most funny stand up comedy routines ever written.
My brother and I were just kids when we saw this sketch on the Parkinson show in the 1970s. We adopted the line, "I'll stop you going to those youth clubs" as a family in-joke and would say it to each other every now and again - to the bewilderment of anyone who happened to be with us at the time. We haven't said it for years but I might just phone him up and say it now. 8=))) Priceless stuff, this. Thanks for the memories bobany1.
I saw Eli and Jimmy Casey in a charity show back in the 80s in Blackpool opera house The third character( with the box) was played by Les Dawson,it was wonderful Les was perfect, then Jimmy and Eli did the wild animal sketch with Eli in the cage with Eli climbing out to pick up Jimmys fag end and then climbing back in again, pure magic. The applause they recieved when they came on was deafening, thanks boys.
