World's Largest Swarm of Hummingbirds!

HELLO! If anyone can confirm a situation like this anywhere in the world i would love to hear about it!! these hummingbirds are in the peak of their migration thru Northern New Mexico...At least 4 species are present here, broadtailed, rufous, colliope, and black-chinned hummers are representing....this is very unique because hummers are very independent and often solitary and territorial...At the rate of feeding here, these tiny birds are going thru 13 thirty two ounce feeders per day....thats about 7 pounds or 3 kilos of sugar...enjoy and peace!

Thanks for the useful info, that is very interesting....Obviously, it would appear that Mr. Hendricks has many more hummers...However, I have still not seen evidence yet of the the density of birds that are present in this video....I wonder why it is that such normally territorial birds would conglomerate like this so rarely or at all, considering their normal routine?

What is your loaction, and what month does this occur? What is your peak consumption of 4:1 nectar per day?

InSouthern AZ Jesse Hendricks has had as many as 100+ feeders that accomodate as many as 9,000 hummers a day, which is the record in our experience.

@HummingbirdSociety thanks for the writing. this is about 15 miles northeast of Taos, NM....The peak is between July 20 and the end of Aug where i would go thru 13, 32oz feeders a day...Which is about 7 pounds of sugar per day...I have heard of and saw a bit of video of Jesse Hendricks place...Our situations may be similar but different in the sense that he has 100 8oz feeders to my 10, 32oz ones...So my feeding was in a much more condensed area....I need experts in counting birds!!

@HummingbirdSociety However,it seemed that during peak times, at any given moment, there were hundreds of birds around and near the feeders....And that number does not speak to how many come and go in a given day...I really have no idea....It is an incredible phenomenon to witness...Maybe i should add more feeders next year and spread out the population more? Regardless, hope i have answered your questions....Peace....

I've seen numbers like this along the Texas coast during migration, but it is a pretty rare occurence.

A useful rule is this: Assuming your mixture is 4 parts water/1 part sugar, 1 ounce feeds five average size hummers for a day. So, 13 x 32 =416 oz/day = 2,080 birds a day. That's a big number! We'll come see you some summer :)
