Our workplace (Legacy Animal Medical Center), as a team, joined in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Lfe walk at East Valley High School in Spokane Valley, WA on June 11-12, 2010. Our fundraiser, for months, was two crazily decorated toilets that we placed in clients' yards throughout Liberty Lake. The client could donate $10 to have it hauled away, $20 to send it to a friend, and $30 to send to a friend and promis not to bring it back. It was a fun idea and raised a lot of awareness for the cause.

We spent the night at the track with someone walking around it at all hours. Luminaria bags are made by participants in honor of cancer victims, fighters, and survivors. A candle burns in each luminaria all through the night. At dark the music is turned down, the lights go off, and all the names on the luminarias are read aloud. It is the most heart-wrenching and yet hope-giving moment. If you've never experienced it you really need to!

  • You'll see luminaries for my mom, grandpa, uncle, grandma, and my husband's mom and brother-in-law. Too much cancer in our families. Makes this even more special!
