Looking for an SSD?
If it's your first time stepping up from a legacy mechanical hard disk drive (hard drive, or HDD), you may have some questions. What type of connection is ideal? What capacity do I need? Is it better for an operating system installation or just for storage? What's the deal with TRIM?

Stay tuned for our SSD tutorial, where you will learn far too much about SSDs for your own good. A warning though: once you start using an SSD-equipped computer, you will never want to wait for a hard drive to spin up again.

  • lol i had no 2.5 to 3.5 inch adapters so i just used electric tape.

  • You can still change to AHCI in windows without having to reformat.

    1) Make sure you're set to IDE in the bios.

    2) Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>system>CurrentControlSet>servic es>msahci

    3) Double click on "Start" and set it's value to '0' (default should be '3').

    4) Restart then go to your BIOS and set the controller to AHCI

    5) Windows will ask you to restart once you're logged back in so do so! or else!

  • Gee, I had no idea how complex SSD requirements are. Thanks heaps for this tutorial. Now I'll be certain I'm getting the right SSD and not blowing $200 on a brick. lol

  • @nubemuffin good job lol

  • So yeah like I say though, when they do come down in price a bit, I'd use a 640 or 700 GB one for boot and software, and all the other ones will be storage. I'll go all SSD.

  • Thanks for the info. I don't think we'll have to weight so long, remember how I said they were showing one of those PCIE card SSD's that is 12TB at CES this year? Well, I think that it won't be so long now. Maybe 5 years or less if there was a 12TB PCIE SSD at CES this year. I hope it is soon though.

  • @MrHamit64 There is 3.2TB SSDs, but they aren't normally sold to normal consumers due to the cost. Just type "3.2TB SSD" into google and be prepared for loss of breath due to the insane amount of money... yes $20,000.00. You'll be waiting at least 5-10 years before you can get a 3TB SSD at a reasonable cost.
