Brief thanksgiving history by GeoBeats. Learn about the history of thanksgiving, how the tradition started and why it is celebrated across the country.
The holiday tradition of Thanksgiving has its roots in colonial Massachusetts in the 17th century. The native Wampanoag and Pawtucket people shared a Fall feast with the Pilgrim colonist fleeing religious persecution in England. To celebrate the colonists' first corn harvest, they invited their native allies, who taught them how to farm the land and saved them from a dooming fate, to share a meal with them. A celebration of life and unity. It was during the Civil War that President Abraham Lincoln declared this day of thanks a national holiday. Now, we celebrate Thanksgiving as a time of family and thanks for the joys of our lives.
