"Give me back my filet o'fish..."

These 2 young female harbor seal pups, Miles (left side of the screen) & Wallace, were rescued by the North Coast Marine Mammal Center in Crescent City, CA where I am a volunteer. We brought Wallace in when she was just a few days old when she was found abandoned on the beach.

Miles, who was close to the same age, was picked up a few days later after being badly attacked by a dog. This video was taken when they were a couple of months old and had recently finished fish school, which is when we "teach" them how to go after fish & eat them on their own without any human assistance.
Wallace picked up fishing very well while Miles, who had suffered major trauma & injuries, including leaving her permanently blind in one eye & with only one nostril, had a harder time being able to grab and keep a hold of a fish.

Which explains the beginning of this video. It happens very quickly at the start of the video when Miles catches a fish but it somehow manages to fly out of her mouth right into Wallace's, who happily & greedily eats it, leaving poor Miles with the cutest confused expression before she dives down to try again.

On a side note, Wallace had apparently been "taking advantage" of Miles' disability until the scales gave her away at her weekly weigh in, giving Miles the last laugh when Wallace was put on a diet and fed separately, so she was unable to steal anymore of Miles meals. By the time they were both released back into the wild a few months later, they were both doing great. Miles was a pro at fishing by then and Wallace no longer had a weight problem. (FYI: they were both thought to be males before a "proper" exam could be performed. Oops! Sorry girls!)
