In 1932 'Cannonball' Richards exploded onto the vaudeville entertainment scene with his remarkable act and his bombastic belly. Franks claim to fame was his seemingly ironclad gut and his act consisted of little more that taking heavy blows to his belly.

Exactly, the point of Richards's act is that he has developed the skill to withstand something that normal people can not. Johnny Knoxville and all of those idiots just do shocking painful stuff for attention. A large majority of it is stuff we could all easily do if we felt like it, but aren't stupid enough. For instance, there is no skill in putting a bottle rocket into my ass and lighting it, I could easily do it, I choose not to because it's dumb. I could NOT take a cannonball to my gut.
