The history of Lebanon goes back much further than the French Mandate. They had special status within the Ottoman Empire. Some argue that Lebanon began in 1516.
The Christian population supported the Crusaders in the Middle Ages. Read Walid Phares on this subject.

All the political parties in Lebanon have been involved with corrupt affiliations with foreign countries and the underground trade of drugs for funds. Down with the war criminals and bring out the strong new leaders of the future

I read Fisk's book 'Pity the Nation' on his time in Lebanon during the civil war, and would recommend it to anybody wanting to understand what it was like to exist in such a crazy society, with all the contradictions it threw up.
