High Cross URC in Tottenham, London is running a conflict resolution project for children as a small part of a larger general youth project where the idea originated. Peaceful Solutions for Conflict Resolution was represented at General Assembly by volunteers Lorraine Downer-Mattis and Steven Ansa-Addo. The young people come from the estate around the church that has in the past had issues with violence. Lorraine Downer-Mattis commented: "These children were courageous enough to want to find alternatives to violence."
Comments among children from the project who were filmed for the awards included these two:
"I've learned there are a lot more alternatives to violence and they will probably be better than just going in and having a fight with the person."
and: "I get angry very quickly, but now I can control it and I talk to the person."
Joint 3rd prize winner in the United Reformed Church's Community Project Awards 2010.

The Media need to look harder for good news stories like this about the church - congratulations for winning this award!
The efforts being led by this church reminds me of how people of the ages like Mahatma Gandhi and Revd. Martin Luther King started to tackle social issues with their campaigns of non-violence which influenced social reform in their respective nations.
Leave a comment if you agree that this project could grow into a contemporary UK example of a campaign for non-violence?
