mmmmmm, I love the south too but I'm not completely sure you get the significance of this piece. Deep river is a Negro Spiritual from the slave tradition. Like most forms of black vernacular music in the u.s., these songs are coded (as slaves could not discuss ideas of freedom and escape in public / around slave masters). "Deep river" in this case is the River Jordan that the enslaved isrealites must cross to get free: freedom, escape, peace on the "other side", there is much here :)
