This film was made to capture what the station area in Cambridge looked like before the CB 1 housing, office and retail development. The "CB1" area in front of the station buildings had been due for redevelopment by Ashwell Property Group. In December 2009 the developers went bust and reformed under the name Brookgate.
Part of the CB1 development is The Cambridge Gateway connection between Hills Road and the station. See how the buses turn around at the mini roundabout outside the station building, with no direct connection to Hills Road. See the location of the bus stops outside the station, before their moving to the Cambridge Gateway, and Guided Busway access road.
The Guided Busway, although almost complete, isn't running, following considerable delays across that project.
There is footage of the Earl Of Derby pub, with the Cambridge Gateway under construction, using land taken from the Pub's garden, and demolished houses and torn down warehousing.
See the stunning old Spillers factory, which reportedly will become a Museum of Agriculture. Shots are taken from various vantage points, including from the Cambridge Leisure Park of this fantastic Cambridge landmark, painted white, and awaiting renovation.
The film contains shots of Great Eastern House on Tennison Road, before its demolition to make way for the Microsoft office building. The planned Hotel next door, to this is no where to be seen!
You can see along Station Road where there are open spaces, made way by demolishing office blocks. The student flats that will occupy this space aren't under construction yet.
The railway station its self has no 'Island Platform', this film being made some months before construction begins. See how London bound trains have to cross over the tracks to the southern end of this long single platform. At 514 yards (470 m), Cambridge has the third longest railway platform in the UK, after Colchester and Gloucester. Shots from The Tony Carter cycle bridge cycle bridge show the trains approach the single mainline platform, using the afore mentioned crossover.
There is also footage taken from the train station's platform, showing the crossover, and from an incoming train showing the new residential developments in various stages of completion, all near Hills Road Bridge.
Some footage is taken from the top deck of a moving double-decker bus.
There will be a lot of changes in this area of Cambridge, since the making of this film, with no doubt more episodes by Nodding Cat Channel! NCC 17.03.11
