The BBC studio audience (who were allowed to SMOKE in those days) gave him just "polite" applause - which threw Jimmy OFF a bit (watch his face after the second number, in which he'd just given it all he HAD!)

But when I saw him in England, in the early Nineties, THAT audience were more enthusiastic! Me and my Lady were down front-centre and when Jimmy let rip with "The Cat" they ERUPTED!

A memorable night, during which I stroked Jimmy's organ - I mean the HAMMOND!!!

  • Can you purchase this video anywhere? If so, is this the whole video or only part of it? The only Jimmy Smith in '65 video I've ever seen was filmed in Paris. I've never seen this before! Thanks!

  • @MrMelodiousThunk (Love your username!) This was TXed on the BBC, so the only DVD source is likely to be THEM. If it's NOT available, you could download it from HERE, using a free downloader programme (Google "free YouTube downloader" and install it on your computer - Orbit works for me - but there are others) then convert it to DVD format using "Any Video Converter" (again, Google it - it's also free) - and (assuming your computer burns disks) you can then play this on your DVD player and TV.

  • I was lucky enough to see JS play twice in the UK; once at the Dominion Theatre in London circa 1978/9 (?) and then about 10 years ago at The Jazz Cafe in Camden.

Both times incredible. Had a C3 of my own at the time and just kept cribbing his tone bar settings.

  • @HighCrystal Apparently, a lot of guys unsuccessfully tried to ape the sound he got from his Hammond, but the SECRET was - NOT to clean its CONTACTS!!

  • You are so lucky to have seen him live, he would have been cooking! I've never seen or heard this 'BBC Session' before. I used to stroke my Hammond (X77) too but I sold it. Even though I had it cut into two & my father made two mad road cases for each piece, it was too heavy to keep carting around to gigs. I did keep its matching Leslie (L77) speaker though. Thanks for uploading this video.

  • @vanessamcqueen11 Leslie cabinets can be used for ALL sorts, apart from organs. Best to turn 'em ROUND though - so the audience can SEE the horns whizzing around!

  • esse era otimo fez muito susseço aqui no brasil

  • WOW, Jimmy Smith makes it look so easy! Hands down, the greatest organist ever!

  • What's the name of the guitarist in this clip, the one with the strat. :)

  • Featuring Charles de Gaulle on guitar or was it Quentin Warren ?

  • Not many jazz guitarists would play a strat, much less in the bridge pickup position...but it sounds good and not thin, like you would think.

  • @Melonhead622

the B3 organist in my old band told me he turned his Leslie around backward to accentuate the Doppler Effect of the rotating speaker; he said he wished the Leslie people would make the rear of the cab finished like the other sides so it would not look look so crude.

  • I have about 50 LP:s with Jimmy S,nice to see him live

    janne from sweden
