Alex demonstrates how to use Google SketchUp to pre-visualize camera angles and lenses. More specifically, he shows how Art Directors and Cinematographers can use the Film & Stage plugin to experiment with different camera lenses and aspect ratios on location or on a production set.

  • Thought it might be worth mentioning here that SketchUp has released an update to the FIlm & Stage Plugin. The plugin is now called the Advanced Camera Tools and is freely available for download from the SketchUp website, under downloads > plugins.

  • how to get a white background

  • @aanrechtmuis easiest way might be to pick a different template. Go to your SketchUp preferences window (Mac = SketchUp > Preferences; PC = Window > Preferences), and open the Template pane. I prefer the Beginning Training Template - Inches which has a white ground plane, and a light blue sky.

You also have the option to customize the ground and sky colors in the Styles window. Go to Window > Styles, then click the Edit tab, and then click the Background settings button.

  • whatever happened to that design competition a few tutorials ago? did anyone win it, or were the submittions not really up to scratch? if noone won, could i possibly get one of those navigator controls. they looked awesome fun!! :)

  • @jonscottmay somebody did win. and we even incorporated some of their ideas into the studio remodel.

  • where do you find this plugin?

  • this plugin is the Film and Stage Plugin. it was created for SKP V5. you can download from the SketchUp website. from the home page, click on downloads > plugins then find the link for plugins for 'older versions of SketchUp'

when you install the plugin it will create folders in your SKP V5 directory. and you'll need to relocate the associated files to the SKP V6 directory.
