(WATCH PART 4)The Walt Disney Company is a powerful force in creating childhood culture all over the world.
Presenting a worldview based on innocence, magic, and fun, its products are endorsed by parents
and teachers, and are enthusiastically embraced by children.
Behind the images of innocence and fantasy, however, is a transnational media corporation
owning media production companies, studios, theme parks, television and radio networks, cable
TV systems, magazines, and internet sites. Disney is now one of the six or seven largest media
corporations that dominate control most of the mass media in the world.
A troubling question concerns the extent to which our view of the world may be skewed by such
a concentration of power in these corporations that mediate images of our world to us, and the
resulting impact on informed participation in our democratic society.
Disney's impact is especially worrisome in view of its role as a major purveyor of the stories that
will be used to construct children's imaginary worlds as well as their notions of the real world.
Mickey Mouse Monopoly is a powerful and effective documentary that owes its power and
effectiveness to its unswerving and persuasive marshalling of evidence and testimony to argue its
case against Disney. It is a good example of a "point of view" documentary, that is, one that does
not purport to present an "objective" or "balanced" overview of all possible points of view
regarding its subject, but rather presents a clear and consistent point of view. Please note,
however, that "point of view" most assuredly does not mean biased or unfair, only that the
creators of and experts in this documentary are honest and straightforward in making clear their
value judgments as they critically examine Disney's power, influence, and responsibility.

  • As someone who grew up watching Disney movies I was probably influenced in some items by the movies but no where in there did I learn racist notions maybe because I had a great mother and teachers growing up who taught me right and wrong. Further more Walt Disney's objective was to create a cartoon to entertain us and not to educate us, that was my parents and teachers job.

  • Hahaha Abigail where do you think you live?

  • While I agree with the sentiment of this documentary that 7 corporations controlling the media is bad for democracy, I disagree that Disney is solely responsible for stereotypes in our society. Disney just goes along with the stereotypes we already accept. If society as a whole did away with those stereotypes, Disney wouldn't use them. Disney merely entertains society. It's the responsibility of parents and teachers to change society.

  • Oh my goodness, just watching this documentary I realized how much Disney affected my childhood and how much I witnessed and/or consumed its merchandise. For example, I remember all of the McDonald's toys and just now I recognized the Hercules yoghurt...I ate that same product and enjoyed it then. For being only 21 years old, I sure have been pandered to and bamboozled a lot.

  • Education is key. These educated people are not just ranting they are calling to attention many things which people do not realize or do not want to accept. The media is shaping the thoughts and attitudes of our young people with money in mind. I have numerous Disney Classics and still enjoy watching them at my age, but having studied the education of our youth I have realized the importance of communicating stereotypes, racism, and sexism with children because they exist all around us.

  • were will we get a sense of what really happened with the native americans? it's this wonderful thing called school. i mean there are a lot of negative messages that school does its best to correct.

  • LOL 2:16

...she made this big speech and everybody was like...'o, yea'

we watched this in class & everyone cracked up at that

  • @DenzNetto

i forgot to sort of mention that

    but yes they were savages

  • @RayWilliamJohansen but you can't compare the after math of what Europeans did compared to natives. Natives & Africans lived different lifestyles. Europeans were all about Civilization when Natives & Africans were more tribalistic, and more connected to mother nature and the nature of this earth. They were Savage when they had to be (For reasons such as hunting, defending their tribes, and survival etc.). Europeans Conquerors were savage for their own selfish reasons. even to each other.

  • these people are just ridiculous. the one women doesn't want to help advertise for disney but does her child wear barbie bookbags and clothes. i'm sure she does and there is another example of big boobed, tiny waisted, huge rear ended women portraying women "wrongly like disney." give me a freaking break. if they aren't complaining about one thing they're complaining about another thing. quit whinning, shelter your kids do whatever you want, just shut up with your riduculous rants!!!

  • in 1:46, the kid talking sounds like hes reading it off of something....
