Kona, Waipi'o and Kohala Flight

Private pilot flight of the Big Island in a Cessna 172R we rented from Hawaii Flight Academy at the Kona airport. We flew up to Waimea and along the insanely steep cliffs and valleys of the Hamakua Coast, then back along the Kohala coast, where we were amazed to see famous beaches like Hapuna and Mauna Kea completely empty at 11:00 a.m. Later we found out all the beaches on the island were closed due to a tsunami warning because of an earthquake in Japan that just so happened to coincide with the day our our flight!

Thank you! I agree--the Big Island really is magical.  The singer is Dennis Pavao, and the song "Ka Manu," which means "the bird." There's a pretty good entry about him on Wikipedia.

oh my god I miss my island too! grew up in waimea for 15 years, now lived on the mainland for 10 yrs and wow seeing this video brought me back.. I miss driving home through puako with the sun setting after a hard day of surfing..

I watch your marvelous video a lot and Hawaii and "Aloha" is slowly coming back into my heart. I've been listening to Frank De Lima's song "Come Back to Me Hawaii"...so true...Too many years on the mainland has taken Hawaii out of my heart...slowly coming back.
