Rap, i.e rhythmic spoken word over beats, is acknowledged to have started in West Africa, with the griots (storytellers who 'rapped' over sparse beats). It evolved through MOBO in American up until the 50s, when beat poetry began.  Toasting, pioneered in Jamaica in the 1950s, was sort of 'chatting' over dub and reggage beat which influenced the first old skool 'rapping' that we'd recognise which emerged in the 70s. Boom.
