Eddy Arnold sings "Smokey the Bear" for an old public service announcement. Purists will tell you that his name is "Smokey Bear" - without the "the". It was this song, which was quite popular with kids in the 1950's, that changed his name in common use. It's not Eddy's fault, the song was written by Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins. However, the Smokey Bear Act of 1952 (16 U.S.C. 580 (p-2); 18 U.S.C. 711) that shortly followed the release of this song, mandates that he only be referred to as "Smokey Bear".

  • This is great! We have the lyrics and we wanted to sing it at our campfire program with the kids, but I could only remember the tune for the chorus. This really helped for the rest of it. Thanks, The Bests.

  • @GeocaverDan

I'm glad it was helphul. This was one of the extras included in the Forest Service documentary entitled "The Greatest Good" that I uploaded. Maybe the kids would be interested - it beats two hours of video games

  • @PackerGreg that movie hella long. When i was studying forestry in school i must have seen that video at least 20 times.

  • Happy Birthday, Smokey the Bear! May you always guide us when camping & remind us that only WE(You & I) can prevent forest fires!

  • Eddy Arnold rocks!

  • I used to have this about 55 years ago on a 78. God, I still love this song!

  • 1:23 best part ever!

  • I wrote a parody of it!

  • The forest isn't good unless you can take or git things from it.

    Love Eddie Arnold.

  • Smokey used to come to my school in Hot Springs, SD (Black Hills) every year and this is just how I remember the song, the graphics and the whole campaign. (I know, I am showing my age) I love Smokey. Now that I live in Colorado in wildfire area, I love him even more.

  • Thanks for posting this video. I haven't heard this song since I was a little girl decades ago. I never knew Eddy Arnold sang it. I thought it was Gene Autry.
