Yes, it's normal to deny the pain of a difficult childhood, it's not normal to make shit up to add to it or to inject yourself into stories that you weren't a part of (Her neighbour being molested by a swimming coach) or to lie about a story to make up more romantically just (Her claim that the swimming instructor killed himself.
