I wanted no more, at age fourteen, than to be an adopted lover of Sartre and de Beauvoir. Now, at twenty-one, I wish to overcome them, and will someday.

Simone Lucie Ernestine Marie Bertrand de Beauvoir, called Simone de Beauvoir (French pronunciation: [simɔn də boˈvwaʁ]; January 9, 1908 -- April 14, 1986), was a French writer, existentialist philosopher, feminist, Marxist,[1] and social theorist. She wrote novels, monographs on philosophy, politics, and social issues, essays, biographies, and an autobiography in several volumes. She is now best known for her metaphysical novels, including She Came to Stay and The Mandarins, and for her 1949 treatise The Second Sex, a detailed analysis of women's oppression and a foundational tract of contemporary feminism. She is also noted for her lifelong polyamorous relationship with Jean-Paul Sartre.

  • regarding the history of philosophy, I can only name two female representatives: Hannah Arendt that brought a major contribution with her totalitarianism theory (same as Popper's) and the brilliant existentialist, friend of Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir. I've just finished her chef d' oeuvre , The Second Sex, and I can honestly say I haven't read anything so clear and pure rational in ages. She was amazing.

  • thank you for posting this video, sometimes I forget that I shouldn't feel guilty for the oppression I sometimes feel and experience as a "female" and a mother, and a thinking one. Women are still the "second sex", still the only people in the world whose very HARD non-stop work (house+children) is legally not entitled to any payment. Still nowadays, a housewife and/or a mother when asked "what do you do" she will say "nothing, I don't work" ! Every woman should be furious. +o

  • @Raluk54 Hello there,

I am actually reading it for my Identity and Perspectives course. What struck you most about the reading besides the clarity of the arguments presented?

  • Thanks for this beautiful vid! The biography is quite complete and the photos are great.Vive Simone de Beauvoir!
