Dennis Sample, of IBM, discusses the migration back to System z and the need to bring applications back in with a higher degree of availability. Tivoli provides customers with core functionality that ensures the highest availability of all network resources as well as intrusion detection and performance monitoring capabilities.

Dennis Sample, Business Unit Executive for the zSeries platform supporting Tivoli and the technical professionals.

Whats interesting about the migration back to z from the management perspective, the challenges that they had historically faced with the growing administration costs and the servers actually just being a linear growth rate . So were seeing that senior management is looking at this platform as a way to consolidate a lot of their costs, bring applications back in with a higher degree of availability

With the introduction of NetView 5.4, theres some new and exciting functionality being introduced that will support a lot of the ITIL initiative our customers are undertaking right now. Not only that, it goes hand in hand with our service management strategy from Tivoli. We have the ability to have our TCP/IP resources and SNA resources discovered and part of our CCMDB for effective change management. But beyond that, NetView still provides some very core functionality that make us best-in-breed. We have the ability to do intrusion detection, which really aids in the fact that that mainframe has never been hacked. Another thing that NetView provides is the very best in performance monitoring, as well as a total automation capability that can ensure the high availability of all your network resources.

NetView 5.4 also introduces enhancements to the OSA adapters as well as taking advantage of the expanded sysplex capability that was introduced with the z10 and the latest operating system. NetView, coupled with system automation, provides the most complex automation environment that is available from any vendor

So with NetView 5.4, it really deserves a good look. Some of the enhancements that are made to this product actually move it beyond what people are talking about today. The integration of the heterogeneous environments, the ability to look at your SNA and your TCP/IP networks simultaneously, the ability that youll have to reduce administrative costs from a managed- perspective using System z, make it a very attractive offering and provide the capability that nobody else can.
