I used to think the ending was sad, but really it's brilliant! He learned to rule his world by surviving and killing the spider. When he escaped from the basement, he accepted what he was and realized that no matter what, we still mean something. We are much smaller than a redwood or a mountain, but that doesn't make us less important. It really is an excellent movie!

The cleverest scene is where he suddenly appears normal size until you discover that he is actually living in a doll's house!

Man, this really is one of the greatest movies of all time-despite the fact that it has one of the saddest endings in the history of film. If they did remake it, even w/ todays special fx, I still don't think they could recreate the elements which made this film great-great acting and screen play!

I agree that this is one of greatest movies of all time, but I actually don't find the ending sad. There's a bittersweetness to it for sure, but I think Scott ultimately emerges triumphant. It's incredibly moving.

I know many people are looking forward to a remake. Personally, I think remakes of classic movies are like Elvis inpersonators. No matter how good they are, they are still not Elvis.

I first saw this as a very young child in the 60's, and it stunned me - I figured there would be a happy ending (his wife and brother would find him, the shrinking would reverse), but instead the ending was metaphysical and ambiguous, but still sad.

The movie was a metaphor for life then death. Youth, then shrinking to old age then death. "To God, there is no zero" In other words how can death be worse than before you were born? To have lived means you are God himself..
