The battle of two chess prodigies from the recent Reggio Emila tournament in Italy played on Dec 31, 2011: 19-year-old Fabiano Caruana (FIDE 2727) played white against the 17-year-old Dutch grandmaster Anish Giri (FIDE 2714). This game was the tipping point in the tournament for Giri, who actually went on to win the whole thing.

At tournament end, Anish Giri edged out Caruana, Nakamura, and Morezevich by 1 point to win the tournament. If Caruana would've won this game, he might've won the tournament. Going into this Round 5 game, Giri had 2 draws and 2 losses, one to Morezevich, the other loss to Nakamura just the round before. I covered Nakamura's Round 5 win against Ivanchuk "Lucky Against Chucky" here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8p-hdKOz-Kw

Note: I understand I've mispronounced Caruana's name in this video, and will use the correct pronunciation of "Care-Ooh-Ana" in future videos.

  • @Mrclawstorm Anybody who dislikes these videos obviously does not watch them. Nice analysis, Matt!

  • @yablecki Thanks Yablecki. I think you're right. They're not watching them. :) Trolls. Little do they know that the more likes AND dislikes, the more popular YouTube regards my videos in their analysis.

  • How soon before the end is it clear that caruana's position is going declining?

  • @RzaChess Around move 20-21. When Caruana played bishop back to c1 (3:17 in the video), Houdini favored black at -0.25. By the time Giri finished doubling rooks on the e file, Houdini favored black at -0.80. Giri could've played Nxf2 on move 24 instead of h6, and Houdini would favor black at -4.59. After the King recaptured the knight on f2, Houdini favored black at -8.27.
