The private biotech firm Celera changed the rules of gene sequencing. The company's so-called "shotgun" technique allowed Celera to sequence the entire genome in eight months -- a feat that took the HGP several years to achieve. As its name suggests, however, the shotgun technique is less than meticulous. While the HGP's traditional method kept track of where each decoded segment came from, Celera's method required that all of the randomly separated pieces of the genome be painstakingly reassembled. This not-inconsequential step took Celera supercomputers another seven months to achieve. Even so, the total time it took the company to map the genome was faster than anyone could have imagined.

  • I hope this is part one....

  • Sorry this is the only clip I have for now. If I can find it though I will post it.

  • Go Science!

  • An excellent point. Especially points out the stupidity and ignorance of people who seem to think race supremacists are attached to darwinism in some way (a common moronic accusation from ID supporters and creationists).

  • nice to see God's creation in microscopes.

  • @renaissanceknight actually science goes quite hard against things that cannot be proven. so yea lots of mute points. things like complexity, all human perceptions. we are infact ants unable to see so we speculate gods and when science says wait thats not what caused this... some adapt to the information some dont.

  • Why is everyone arguing a mute point?! Our Genes can be found out by science! Science can some day soon cure cancer, diabetiese, brain abnormalities, Autism, Hyperthyroidism, blind people, deafness and anything else that you can think of But, I am Autistic and if Autism is the next evolution in Human kind then let it happen! All that I want is to make life better for everyone with a disability God and Science do not go against each other! In fact they support each other! We are children learning!

  • @datzfast there is a huge difference between how dna was discovered and how people are using it today

you said that a computer wasn't required. May I clarify that it is not the difficulty of sequencing DNA, yet the length of time to sequence without a computer that necessitates computer involvement in order to make practical advancements

let me put it in your language

your washer is the equivalent of the computer's involvement

it is a man-made machine that speeds up work

= less time then by hand

  • let me put it in your language, i have a washing machine with a computer controller. its still a washing machine. and it still takes just as long to wash my clothes the computer didnt speed it up. they didnt build faster computers we built faster robotics to decode the genome. jesus its hard to dumb down the logic.

  • @PuckShootinFanatic Watson and Crick the discoverors of DNA as a genetic material han no computer. also a computer can print out a sequence but cannot decipher anything related to DNA. the triplet condon or frame reading of DNA does not require a computer. no more than learning your ABC really. did robotics spead up the decipering of the human genome, yes. but honestly a computer wasnt required. Science and history are clearly not your strong points.

  • @datzfast HAha! so you assume that better would be writing it by hand is that correct? Did we not create the programs and the computers to decipher those DNA codes for us? How long would a million years sound as opposed to say ten? :P I'm pretty sure computers simply recording human genetic coding is no big deal

If anything it is the only possible way to make any progress within a lifetime
