"Everyday I Write the Book" is another of Elvis's bigger hits that we borrowed. My lyrics focus on the frustration that can occur from trying to include special needs students in a regular class without the proper support staff and administration. Kasey sat this one out since he didn't really know the song and he was really sick with the flu that day. I think he laid on a pew for this recording. I'm pretty sure the music on this one is straight from a MIDI file from the internet played on my Korg X3. It was recorded "live" using my church's sound system (Maumee Valley Grace Brethren Church). Special thanks to Scott Sjostrom for his camera work which made what would have been a boring video, had it been filmed on a tripod, into something watchable. Not lip-synced, this one is obviously "finger-synced" and poorly so.
Everyday I Break the Chalk
(Sung to Elvis Costello's "Everyday I write the Book")
Don't tell me you don't have the answers
When you tell me you don't have the money
To pay for a new support teacher
When you ask me to include a mix of students
I teach to the middle but they're falling out both ends
So I'm asking you for more than talk
'Cause everyday, everyday, everyday, everyday I break the chalk
Frustration and anguish over those who fall behind
I'm trying hard but going out of my mind
All of your comments and your noble ideals
They look good on paper but they're hard to make real
Collaboration is what I really need to succeed
I'd be willing to take the lead
You said you'd support me in whatever I'd asked
Well I'm telling you now that I'm sinking fast
Don't tell me you don't care about these children
When you know down in your heart that you love them
With your budget and your actions won't you show them?
No, it's not a perfect world where kids pass all their courses
But we can make it better if you'd just give us resources
A+ Love your songs....good message. Collaboration works when you work at collaboration. Keep up the good work.
