It's simple: hell was "invented" by the Church leaders to scare people who didn't want to follow their teachings. There is no hell (and there is no heaven ether) it's a tactic to keep people scared so that they listen to their leaders. Imagine if no one believed that hell and heaven don't exist. How could Church leaders keep their power over their people?
It's so easy to tell people that they will go to hell - if they don't listen to Church teaching. Just like saying that God wrote the Bible.
