I've been working on these flurried finger-rolls recently, so just putting this up for fun. Mike Seeger teaches something similar on one of his instructional tapes, from an Uncle Dave Macon tune. Seems to be a minstrel or classic banjo ornament. You can dissect it up to a point but then you just have to get your fingers to produce.

I must have first heard this tune from Art Rosenbaum, this has a Cajun version mixed in. gCGBD.

  • This is great, thanks for posting it. I'm always trying to figure out Uncle Dave's picking, particularly the way he uses this type of fast roll to start a phrase, as in "I Ain't Got Long to Stay."

  • Great, glad to help.

  • tom hanway's irish 5 string banjo book has a similar technique, i'll have to try this out.

  • It sounds closer to a Carolina 3 finger style than a Classic banjo. I'll have to learn that. if it also goes by "Bucking Mule", I might have that tune in my book on American Banjo I bought from Mel Bay.

  • WOW nice!
