it's hard to explain but basiclly I got it that she was created as a program that could bring the computer world and the real world to merge or bring the computer world to the real something like that but she realized it was wrong so she changed things in the real world so that a lot of things did not happen and in the world she did not exist cept she exists in the shadows watching since she was still a program that is alive but did not age or something like that

it's totally different from saikano, well saikano is quite depressing while Serial Experiments Lain is weird but in a good way I'd say, 13 episodes of mind-fuckery...

Lain is kind of a downer, but I don't see how it's like Saikano. There's nothing out there like this, exepct Nakamura's other masterpiece, Kino's Journey, and even that is very different.
