Albín Brunovský (* Zohor, nr Bratislava, 25 Dec 1935 - † Bratislava, 20 Jan 1997). Slovak printmaker, painter and illustrator, and the most important and influential Slav artist of his generation. Studied at the Central School of Industrial Art at Bratislava from 1951 to 1955 and at the School of Fine Arts, Bratislava, from 1956 to 1961, completing his training there in 1963--6. In 1967 he was put in charge of the book production department and appointed professor in 1981. His early work as printmaker and illustrator derived its inspiration from the imaginative tradition of Slovak art, which he interpreted in his own version of neo-Surrealism. From 1964 the influence of Klee, Kandinsky and Miró is evident in his work. His early illustrations are clearly inspired by Chagall. He gradually developed his unique version of Neo-Mannerism, adapting his artistic language accordingly, achieving in his graphic work at the technical mastery of etching and lithography. Among his first works with Mannerist traits is Homage to Arcimboldo (1965; see Peterajová, no. 18). This style is fully developed in the cycle Bella Italia, I--XVIII (1969--79; Bratislava, Slovak N.G.).
While remaining faithful to his imaginative position, he slowly moved towards the rigour of Verism. In the 1970s, apart from historic painting (e.g. Sisters from Fontainebleau, I--XVIII, 1972; Dolný Kubin, Oravská Gal.), he produced works in which natural motifs began to appear, inspired by the Slovak countryside, such as a Walk in Záhorie (1972; Dolný Kubin, Oravská Gal.). His work began to move away from French and Italian Mannerism, and came under the influence of the Flemish masters, as in the cycle Lady in a Hat, I--IX (1981--2; see Peterajová, nos 115--21). He has illustrated more than 100 books for children and adults, producing paraphrases of texts by way of free improvisation, for example his illustrations for Ovid's Art of Love (Bratislava, 1970--72) and Rimbaud's Le Bateau ivre (Bratislava, 1981). He developed a combined technique for painting on panel in which he made full use of the properties of the material, as in the Third Variant of the Super Large Garden Theatre (1971; Bratislava, Gal. Capital SR) and Cruise of Divine Cleopatra's Fans (1988; Hana Larvová priv. col.). He has also designed bookplates, banknotes, postage stamps and film posters.
