getting hit in the face by a scope really has nothing to do with how close your face is to the scope its just that the stock wasn't tightly on his shoulder, or on his shoulder at all really. so if your shoulder isn't in the way, the recoil of the gun will keep moving back until it hits something or has no momentum

my brother was 8 and he had a shot at our 223. remmington bolt action, and he put his eye right up against the scope and when he fired it left a bruise in the shape of the scope ring
