Pastor Mark Driscoll examines Luke 2, where an angel announces the birth of Jesus, Christ the Lord, to shepherds in a field. The angel reveals how we are to see Jesus. We are not to insert him into a false ideology (e.g., atheism, deism, pantheism/panentheism, or theism) that offers no hope, no good news, no savior. Rather, we are to praise Jesus like the angels, Mary, and the shepherds did.

This clip is taken from the sermon "Christ the Lord," preached by Pastor Mark Driscoll at the Mars Hill Church Ballard campus in Seattle, Washington, on November 15, 2009. It is the 8th sermon in our sermon series, "Luke's Gospel: Investigating the Man Who Is God."

  • Well, there's no hero coming for Theism either, but at least Deists are grown up enough to admit that.

  • Just another uniformed person wanting to talk about things that he only partially knows anything about. Makes me sorry I bothered to watch.

  • This guy is a coward. He belives in god out of misery and fear of reality...

Enjoy life, enjoy all of it, withouth death or pain there will be no good moments either...

  • Does this preacher have any data backing up his claim that all Deists are suicidal? I'd like to see the statistics on that.

  • I wish he actually knew a thing or two about Deism. God didn't necessarily leave us alone my friend. He left us with Reason. That alone is enough to get me by.

  • You are talking on something you don't have an idea on, like the rest of Christians do after all

  • @Firequacker like I said last comment we were given the ability to reason, but also have unique features (such as imagination)as a Deist my philosophy is that people should acknowledge this powerful entity (God), be self-sufficient, have a sense of morality, and try to discover the truth about the universe.

  • @Firequacker haha I'm not sure if I could make it short, but I'll try.

  • @xKatz90 As far as we now, we are the only planet with life. The rest of the Universe is without experience, therefore it is useless except to function so that we may exist. We are the only subjective creation, for which incredible amounts of dead, destructive matter had to peruse and interact for billions of years to create. God had to do some ridiculously awesome things to get warm hearts where he wanted them.

  • @thedeadlyflow Why should our interaction with the Universe have no connection to its humanity? I want to discuss this with you in ideological terms, so let's keep the answers concise, okay? Anecdote is good, but keep it short if you can, these discussions get huge.

  • The problem with religion (especially the Abrahamic religions) is that they try to humanize God too much. They give him name Yahweh/Allah/Elohim, home heaven, son Jesus, and personality benevolent and merciful. We Deist look at the universe in a more rational manner, we see this powerful entity as the first cause of the universe. We don't need to depend on divine powers as we live. We were given the ability to reason and free will, therefore no need for this Deity to intervene in our affairs.

  • Well Driscoll, why would an all-powerful creator (which I do believe in) would be constantly involved with the affairs of a single on a single planet? Would I be overly obsessed with what's happening with a group of plankton living deep in the Antarctic Ocean? No. We are inherently insignificant to the rest of the universe. People need to stop acting like we are the center of it.
