The original Z was sold in October 1969 in Japan as the Nissan Fairlady Z and was also exported to the U.S. as the Datsun 240Z that same year. Since this year Nissan has been building and selling the newest Z, the 370Z, which is now the 40th year for the Z line of sport coupes and convertibles.
The Z car has been an overwhelming success for Nissan, with more than 1,685,000 models in five different generations being sold over that time.
Nissan is now celebrating the 40th anniversary milestone with the launch of a special edition 370Z Coupe that goes on sale next spring (the first Datsun 240Z actually went on sale in the U.S. on October 22 1969).
The special edition model is based on the Touring spec of the regular 370Z and comes with a six-speed manual transmission and Nissans nifty Synchro-Rev automatic rev-matching function. The car also gets a limited-slip differential, bigger brakes than the regular model and 19-inch Rays forged wheels. Special touches include red leather trim, red stitching throughout the cabin and a number of commemorative plaques. Finally, the cars exterior is also finished in a unique "40th Quartz" paint scheme.
Pricing will be revealed closer to its arrival at dealerships across the country next spring
Nissan is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its iconic Z cars with the launch of a special edition 370Z but its unlikely to come to the UK this year.
The first Z car to go on-sale was the Datsun 240Z in October 1969, and the new Nissan 370Z 40th Anniversary Edition commemorates the history of one of Japans first sports cars.
The new model gets the same 3.7-litre V6 as the standard car thats mated to a manual box. It is also equipped with the Sport Package, which includes the clever SynchroRev Match system (a manual gearbox which blips the throttle automatically on downshifts), new front and rear spoilers, a limited-slip differential and upgraded Nissan Sport Brakes.
Completing the look is 19-inch Rays forged aluminium-alloy wheels, a 40th Quartz exterior paint job and an exclusive red leather interior.
Despite it being the 40th anniversary this year, the model is not likely to go-on sale in the UK until 2010 at the earliest.
A Nissan source told Autocar: Nothing has been confirmed or decided yet. Its a possibility we could it or something similar over here, but we have a habit in Europe of getting things much later than Japan.
The source said Nissan was keen to see the model on-sale in the UK, and a decision was expected to be taken on its future soon. The car will be on display at the Tokyo motor show next week.
