Film of the Day: The Blob (1988) by Chuck Russell. Penned by Frank Darabont (developer of the not dissimilar "The Walking Dead"), The Blob features Jeffrey DeMunn (Dale from "The Walking Dead" - playing the Rick Grimes role here), Jack Nance, (Eraserhead himself, and Pete from Twin Peaks - The Blob takes place in a secluded, wooded small town with damn fine pie at the local diner), and Del Close as The Preacher (mentor to Ghostbusters Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Harold Ramis - he also bequeathed his skull to future productions of Hamlet). Coupled with The Mist and the pilot of The Walking Dead, The Blob is proof Darabont is at his best lifting the supernatural horror genre above and beyond the plateau where it usually slumps. With violent and unexpected deaths, the film keeps shifting - then killing - the protagonist. It's like Psycho every 15 minutes.
