dont just touch the disc in the hdd, your skin may burn off or dmg the hdd

Get a Dell Ultrascan p991 (19 inch Sony Trinitron). It is the best CRT up to this day, with vivid color and a screen that does not catch static due to a special coating. It is discontinued, but far better then a current one. Mine is from '00, and it has better picture than my new Hi-Def LCD TV (1080p).
P.S. It also comes in 21 inch as the p1110, and 17 inch as the p780.

Decent CRTs are getting more expensive all the time.

You can't really do it without some sophisticated equipment. You have to make sure absolutely no dust gets into it, which is pretty much impossible to do without the special equipment.
Plus some drives have there covers shaped in a specific pattern to control the turbulence inside. Then you have to consider the static buildup on the plexi.
If you have a old drive laying around then try it on that....

Do you know if it would damage the hard drive to open the case and attach plexi instead to show the insides moving?

Man, I had the full 8 minutes but you wouldn't believe how much bitching and flaming I got for having such a boring and long video. I got sick of it and just took it down, and put it back up very short.
