One of the best scenes of a truly great movie. The way Cronenberg handles Johnny's (Christopher Walken) actually being at the scene of the crime is remarkable. And the idea she knows him, the whole thing is just too haunting.

Cronenberg fired a .357 Magnum loaded with blanks just off camera to make Smith's flinches seem more involuntary; this was Christopher Walken's own idea.

@KellyGreen5555 Very unjustly underrated. Unlike so many of the Stephen King adaptations, despite the fact that the story line divergences greatly from the book, it still captures the mood perfectly. And, you hit it just right with the word "tragic." I never really thought of the novel as a horror novel, as such, but more of a modern equivalent of tragedies such as Oedipus and Hamlet.

they really don't show that in movies any more I don't think so much...the girl is dead and he's still gonna get some titty?.. makes your stomach curl when you think people have killed perfectly good girls like this...these day's you don't have to even buy a hooker to see titty's..girls might just show you some...no need to be a freak and be a killer..just try n talk to one..be nice,.. and you'll get some. jerk.

Agreed...but it's Christopher Walken who makes this scene unforgettable. He is both haunting and haunted. A tragic figure that the audience connects with...I think that this 1983 film is underappreciated.
