Artists are depicted in movies and media in different ways - sometimes fairly straightforwardly, but often in ways that promote myths about what it takes to be a "real" singer, writer, actor or other creator.
Buying in to those negative depictions and myths - often subconsciously - can distort our sense of identity and limit what we think we can do creatively.
Writer and creativity coach Julia Cameron says she sometimes asks people to list ten traits they think artists have.
She notes that they say things like artists are broke, artists are crazy, artists are drug-addicted and artists are drunk.
She asks, "Doesnt this make you want to rush right out and become an artist? We have a mythology in America around creativity thats very, very negative."
