@Lukerizzuto Disregard my question about downshifting, I remember that hardly any race cars of that era had actual transmissions, So I'm guessing that when the drivers wanted to slow down, They'd let off of the throttle and let the car coast and gradually apply the brakes so as not to flip the car over.

@lukerizzuto There were some race cars of that period that could top out at 100 mph, But I'd be too scared to even try to go that fast with only rear brakes and skinny tires, I was wondering if you knew if any of the race drivers of that period like Barney Oldfield and Cornelius Vanderbilt downshifted to slow down their cars or if they just coasted to slow down and only applied the brakes when they felt it was safe to do so.

@ford9572 I use #30 non-detergent. Nothing that era cruzes that fast. The three Ps would cruz around 55 or 60 but not for extended periods of time. This car cruzes nice at 45. cars of that vintage only had rear wheel brakes so it's not safe over 50.

@lukerizzuto, That makes sense, What type of oil do you normally use? And can this car cruise comfortably between 75 and 85 mph? I should think that it can do that without any trouble at all, Or is that pushing it a little too hard?

@ford9572 The compression ratio is 4.5:1. No on the trans. It would wreck the best original known to exist.

@Lukerizzuto My mistake, By the way, What's the compression ratio on this engine? And also, Do you think it would be at all possible to replace. the 3 speed transmission with a 4 or 5 speed? Or not really?

I've seen at least 6 of these early Chevy V8's running, they were called Model D's, a car that was much different from the 490's and F-A's for 1917-18. Besides the 5 passenger touring car, (D-5) there was the 4 passenger 'Chummy' roadster (D-4). The V8 engine displaced 288ci via 3 11/16" X 4.00" Bore,Stroke.

No, the generator is in the front valley gear driven off the cam and the distributor is driven off the back of the generator. Delco Remy. The starter is opposite generator in the back of the valley with a standard bendix. Autolite.
