  • Hm, an interesting ending, I think it might have worked better though if he didn't run around with that rifle or whatever you call it before. If he left, then we heard the gun shot, that would be enough. But you'd think they'd be a bit alarmed, but they just kept singing when he ran around with the gun. But I'm just happy people put this operetta on, regardless of what happens to point!

  • I remember a PBS production many years ago in which Joel Grey fell insensible after a final dance and a death-mask seemed to have appeared on his face. I don't think anyone thinks Jack Pointe could have survived this heartbreak. In this sense, this is surely the most romantic of the G&S operas.

  • I must say I prefer the orginial ending where it is unclear whether or no Point dies. The twist ads to the entertainment.

  • To keep the ambiguity of the fate of Jack - perhaps he could have missed?

  • I disagree with ZenWD, in the traditional ending you are not sure whether Point dies or lives - in this version there is no doubt and the sudden blackout is very effective.

  • There are so many interesting ways of staging this end - judging by the sound effect I assume point went off for a quick game of tennis in this production?

    I am not against updating G&S but this is pretty mindless.

  • Removing all the "Thee"s and "thou"s because of the updated period doesn't quite work, for more than one reason. Some of Gilbert's carefully-wrought rhymes are lost, but there are other lines that have the archaic tone that were not changed, and so it is inconsistent.
